Occupational Safety & Health program to join Community & Technical College

Students in the Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) program will join the UAA Community & Technical College (CTC) July 1, when administration and delivery of the program transfer from Kenai Peninsula College to CTC.

the Construction, Design & Safety Division.
“We are pleased to have the Occupational Safety & Health program join the Community & Technical College,” said Bonnie Nygard, CTC interim dean. “Safety is critical to industries that hire our graduates, such as construction, oil and gas, and mining. This program complements existing CTC programs well.”

Currently, students can earn an associate of applied science (AAS) degree through the program, and CTC plans to expand program offerings to include a bachelor’s degree. The program has strong industry support, and the bachelor’s degree is being designed with input from industry representatives to ensure it meets the needs of Alaska’s major employers of safety professionals.

Additionally, OSH faculty will be working to accredit the program through ABET, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education. Accreditation signifies the program meets standards of quality and excellence that prepare students to enter the industry.

The OSH program will be part of the Construction & Design Technology Division, which will be renamed the Construction, Design & Safety Division to reflect the addition. As part of the transition, Al Grant, assistant professor of occupational safety and health, will be joining the division as a faculty member.

As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure a smooth program transition for current OSH students, CTC will be hosting an information session in August. Details will be provided to students via email. Questions can be addressed to Leesa Arnes at 907-786-6495 or leesa@uaa.alaska.edu. Information will also be available on the Construction, Design & Safety Division website at www.uaa.alaska.edu/cdt.
