New café opens at Chugiak-Eagle River Campus

The UAA Chugiak-Eagle River Campus (CERC) and the Mat-Su Borough School District (MSBSD) hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the Eagle Center Café on Monday.

UAA and Mat-Su Borough School District administrators and the community join to celebrate the opening of the Eagle Center Café at the UAA Chugiak-Eagle River Campus.

In a collaborative effort, CERC and MSBSD funded the construction and opening of the Eagle Center Café to meet the needs of UAA and Alaska Middle College School (AMCS) students. The middle college provides high school students the unique opportunity to earn their high school diploma while simultaneously earning credits toward an associate of arts degree from UAA.

“Chugiak-Eagle River Campus is excited to offer this new service to our students, especially our AMCS students who arrive early and nontraditional, working students who may not have time for dinner before class begins,” said CERC Director Kim Griffis.

Designed with students in mind, the café, operated by Nana Management Services, features multiple electronic ports and free Wi-Fi. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Stephen Strom, associate dean of Extended Studies & Workforce Development  and Deena Paramo, MSBSD superintendent, were in attendance to cut the ribbon.

CERC provides instruction and related activities to meet the Chugiak and Eagle River community needs for postsecondary courses, workforce development, professional and continuing education, and student support services. In addition to daytime classes, CERC offers courses scheduled in a once-a-week meeting format in the evenings and on the weekends to provide educational access for nontraditional, working adults or those who need greater flexibility in an academic schedule.
