Deena Paramo, superintendent of the Mat-Su Borough School District and Tom Case, UAA chancellor, cut the ribbon in front of the Alaska Middle College School housed at the Chugiak-Eagle River Campus.

On Thursday, May 2, UAA and the Mat-Su Borough School District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their partnership to establish the Alaska Middle College School.
The school, which opened its doors in fall 2012, is an early college program housed at the Community & Technical College's Chugiak-Eagle River Campus. It allows junior and senior Mat-Su students to earn credits toward a UAA Associate of Arts degree while completing their high school diploma. Students take classes that satisfy both high school diploma and UAA general education requirements. The program helps students become college-ready in addition to shortening the time it typically takes to get a degree. Forty-two students are currently registered through the district.
Leadership from both educational institutions attended the event. University of Alaska President Patrick Gamble spoke, praising the partnership and the hard work required by individuals at both institutions to make the establishment of the Alaska Middle College School a reality.
