When it comes to aviation safety, Mark Madden is a leading educator and a tireless advocate who consistently promotes continuing-education opportunities to the aviation community. A professor in the Community & Technical College’s Aviation Technology Division, Madden’s high standards and commitment to excellence are evident in his approach to his own training.

A master-certified-flight instructor, Madden is one of only 106 aviation professionals worldwide to earn this recognition three times. A gold standard among aviation educators, it is the only industry professional accreditation recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration.

For the past six years, Madden has served as a representative of the local FAA Safety Team. FAASTeam aims to improve the nation’s aviation safety record by fostering a culture of safety within the aviation community.

“Professor Madden is continuously at the forefront of aviation safety,” said Rocky Capozzi, ATD director. “He is always thinking of the most innovative methods to engage the aviation community and to make aviation safety first in the minds of all aviators.”

So, it came as a pleasant surprise when the National General Aviation Awards Committee announced that Madden had been named a regional General Aviation Award winner. The General Aviation Awards program recognizes individual aviation professionals on the local, regional, and national levels for their contributions to aviation, education, and flight safety.

To be nominated, candidates must have at least five-year’s experience in their respective fields coupled with proper FAA certification. Regional nominees of the program’s four award categories – aviation maintenance technician, avionics technician, certificated flight instructor, and FAASTeam representative – are then named finalists for the national awards.

“These awards highlight the important role played by these individuals in promoting aviation education and flight safety,” said JoAnn Hill, General Aviation Awards Committee co-chair. “The awards program sponsors and supporters are pleased that these outstanding aviation professionals are receiving the recognition they so richly deserve.”

Robert Lewis and Mark Madden

with the 2013 Regional FAAST Team Representative of the Year award.
Madden received the 2013 Regional FAASTeam Representative of the Year award in a brief ceremony on Feb. 11, which took place during his Monday afternoon private-pilot-ground-school course at the Aviation Technology Center. In attendance to present the award was Robert Lewis, regional administrator for the FAA’s Alaskan Region.

“I was impressed and honored to be the recipient of an award presented by someone the stature of Bob Lewis,” said Madden.

A few days later, Madden received a call he was not expecting from Hill, who told him he had been named the 2013 National FAASTeam Representative of the Year.

“This award reminds me of the importance of this type of volunteer effort in the eyes of the FAA,” said Madden. “I look forward to continued collaboration with the FAASTeam organization in the future in an effort to help improve general aviation safety.”

Madden and a guest have been invited to attend the national awards ceremony at AirVenture 2013, an annual air show hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh, Wis., that will take place in late July. FAA Administrator Michael Huerta will present the prestigious award.

Congratulations, Professor Madden! The Community & Technical College values your devotion to your students and your commitment to excellence in aviation safety.
